FOUR CORNERS
Anna Bohman Gallery is pleased to present Oskar Hult's second exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition contains a series of new paintings wherein Hult continues to explore the boundary between being and perception.
The Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence is home to Michelangelo's I Prigioni (The prisoners); four large sculptures ordered in 1505 for a papal burial chamber. However, the order was never completed and the sculptures were found, unfinished, in Michelangelo's studio after his death. For centuries people have been fascinated by these four bodies trying to free themselves from the surrounding marble. They are inevitably trapped but still, as it appears, they have reached their absolute beauty and liberation to exist in the space between. It is in this space Oskar Hults paintings exist.
In the exhibition Four Corners will we meet paintings in varying formats. The elements and shapes work with an inner logic. They seek themselves and each other within the painting and between paintings. The surface tension of the fabric allows us to discern what rises to the surface. At the same time it slides away from the gaze into the color and into the depth. At the same time as we start to understand the story, and want to seek it, the form falls away and blends with our own mirror image in the water surface.
OSKAR HULT (b. 1986) lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. Educated from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria.
Hult's work has been shown at Moderna Museet, Malmö; Market Art Fair, Stockholm; Galleri Thomassen, Gothenburg; The Royal Academy of Fine Art, Stockholm; Gallery Project Room, Helsinki; Tsukuba Art Museum, Tsukuba, Japan; Klasse Kirsi Mikkola, Vienna; Konstnärshuset, Stockholm etc.
Oskar Hult was awarded the Fredrik Roos Art Grant 2017 with the motivation "for paintings that in a highly sensitive way allow materials and fragments from outside the world of art to be incorporated into new contexts in a non-hierarchical order. His pictures become time capsules that invite observers to immerse themselves and focus their gaze."
